We’re fifteen days into Black Philanthropy Month 2013 (BPM 2013) and the momentum is growing across the country! So in case you missed it, here’s a roundup of media mentions and social media posts for BPM 2013 from the past week:
The Charlotte Post profiles Tiffany Legington Graham, Director of Advancement at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture. She shares,
“In addition to my parents, most of my extended family members were largely educators in public schools, and so I grew up with an understanding and an obligation to serve, and that it takes all of us to build a great community. I would consider my parents to be philanthropists, even on their middle-income salaries, and I’ve learned that you don’t need millions of dollars to give back and make a difference.”Graham also notes current and upcoming exhibits at the Gantt Center.
Charlotte Viewpoint talks with Joy Paige, Johnson C. Smith University's (JCSU) Vice President of Institutional Advancement about education, philanthropy and diversity. JCSU is the sponsor of their August interview series in honor of Black Philanthropy Month, in which Valaida Fullwood interviews a number of Charlotte African Americans engaged in multiple facets of philanthropy.
BET.com promotes BPM 2013 with the article, “What You Can Do for Black Philanthropy Month.” The slideshow article includes events from the BPM 2013 master calendar that can be found here.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy publishes a special report, “Tomorrow’s Donors,” that spotlights the changing giving landscape as the country grows more diverse. The article “Blacks Build Ties Through Giving Circles” shares the story of the Next Generation of African American Philanthropists in Raleigh, NC.
Meka Sales, a program officer for Duke Endowment, is profiled in Charlotte Viewpoint for its BPM 2013 series. When asked what her first memory of generosity was, she shares:
“My mother founded Chantilly Pyramid Minority Student Achievement Committee (CPMSAC) in 1984 as a way to recognize the academic achievements of minority students in our school system. I was 12 years old at the time, but she still asked me to make a contribution. She asked if it was okay to re-gift trophies I won in dance competitions and pageants. I don’t even remember thinking twice about it when I said, “sure”—a typical 12 year old’s response. I valued those trophies, but I was also reared in a very generous household. My parents and grandmother embedded a spirit of “helping one another” deep down in my DNA.”
BPM organizer Valaida Fullwood pens an op-ed, “I Dream of A Day” for the N.C. Center for Nonprofits. Fullwood will provide the keynote address at their upcoming statewide conference for North Carolina’s nonprofits.
