NEW YORK, NY - On February 4th, New York Blacks in Philanthropy, Resource Generation and The North Star Fund celebrated the release of Between A Silver Spoon and The Struggle: Reflections on the Intersections of Racism and Class Privilege at the Community Church of New York. Sponsored by Bolder Giving, the intimate event featured selected readings by the author and food and wine for 150 guests.
Inspired by the August readings of Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists in honor of Black Philanthropy Month, the hosts of Between A Silver Spoon and The Struggle’s release party remarked about the significance of the event being held during Black History Month. “The norm in philanthropy is to speak about people of color as recipients,” said Sheriden Booker of New York Blacks in Philanthropy. “I’m excited for the conversation around this book to help shift that and hear more about how Black people and other people of color are giving.”

The first in a series of events to be held around the country, the event fostered important dialogue around the intersection of racism and class privilege for a diverse audience dedicated to organizing and social change.
Written by Nicole Lewis, Between a Silver Spoon and the Struggle combines political analysis and personal reflection, to explore the nuances and contradictions faced by people of color with wealth. With wit and compassion, Lewis takes on the myth of the American Dream, how to identify one’s own class privilege, and first steps towards building financial literacy and becoming a donor to progressive social change. The book is an insightful and quick read for people of all races and class backgrounds who are interested in understanding the intersection of racial oppression and class privilege more deeply.
